TDMS seventh graders finish season undefeated

Football team uses 135-27 scoring edge for 6-0 record

When visualizing the direction of The Dalles Middle School football program, coach Paul Beasley has greater long-term goals in line for his athletes, which span further than just wins and losses. This seventh-grade group of 27 finished with an undefeated 6-0 record and outscored their opponents by a 135-27 margin, posting shutouts in three games against Armand Larive (Hermiston), Sandstone (Hermiston) and Hood River, by a combined, 82-0.

The Dalles Booster Club is looking for volunteers

The Dalles High School Booster Club has a mission to encourage excellence for all students involved in athletic activities, stimulate a positive community image, promote student health and a healthy competitive spirit at TDHS by providing resources, promoting parent and community involvement in a strategic partnership designed to enhance the development of all athletic activities.

Athletics East qualifies nine for regionals

Team puts in solid work at Saturday’s state meet

For their first cross country race off the fall campaign, runners from the Athletics East Running Club rose to the challenge at the Oregon USATF Oregon Association Junior Olympic State Championships this past Saturday on the campus of Corbin University in Salem.

Vets, kids get together on Thursday

Veterans Day ceremonies take place Thursday at two schools in The Dalles and community members are invited to attend. The events to honor those who have served begins about 9 a.m. at The Dalles Middle School, 1100 East 12th Street, when an H60 Coast Guard helicopter from Astoria lands on the football field. Also on scene will be a 40-foot utility boat.

Chenowith goes Disney

Chenowith Elementary School is putting on the Disney production of “Aladdin Kids” on Nov. 2, 3, 4, and 5, in the school cafeteria. The performances Nov. 2-4 will start at 6:30 p.m., and on Sunday, Nov. 5, the performance is at 2 p.m.

TDHS ASPIRE seeks mentors

The Dalles High School is looking for mentors willing to help juniors and seniors plan for their next steps after graduation. The ASPIRE program pairs mentors with one or more students to help them line up plans ranging from the military to trade school to college.

Heart-wrenching child abuse cases spark change in the Mid-Columbia region

A 2-year-old boy arrived at Mid-Columbia Medical Center with a broken collarbone and extensive bruising on his arms and back several years ago. Scott Williams, a detective with the Wasco County Sheriff’s Office, remembers getting that case to investigate. He described it as “heart-wrenching.”

Hoops signups are tonight at 6 p.m.

The Gorge Hoops Basketball is offering a one-day signup for its youth recreational league from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at Wahtonka. If players are not signed by Oct. 18, they will be unable to participate in the league games, but if a player cannot make it, someone can attend in their place.

Elementary school sets top mark of 138 to defeat Dry Hollow

On a day when record numbers were achieved, Colonel Wright School reclaimed local bragging rights with the most students in attendance at the 20th annual Jumpstart Elementary Cross Country Meet held on Sept. 26 at Sorosis Park in The Dalles.

Report card: Chenowith boosts scores

Chenowith Elementary School showed a 20 percent gain in overall academic achievement in the 2016-17 school year, according to the just-released state school report card. In a statement on the state report card, Chenowith Principal Anne Shull said it was “a year of celebration for Chenowith and our students!”

CGBA hosts Sunday tryout

The Columbia Gorge Basketball Academy will again be organizing traveling basketball teams for local boys and girls from the third-through-eighth grades with a tryout session slated to run from 12:30-3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 15 at The Dalles Middle School.

Whooping cough reported at The Dalles High School

A case of whooping cough was reported Monday at The Dalles High School, and parents are urged to contact their primary care provider if their child develops a cough or a cough with fever.
