Christmas giving: Community to support troops

HR and TD residents invited to help fill care packages, pack holiday boxes

Community members in The Dalles and Hood River are asked to donate snack and hygiene items to make Christmas merrier for an Oregon National Guard platoon and other troops in Afghanistan. The goal of the Holidays for Heroes Committee is to pack at least 30 boxes at a public event on Thursday, Nov. 16.

Sinfonietta rehearsal delights area students

Over 80 schoolchildren from The Dalles were treated Tuesday night to a dress rehearsal by the Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association’s (CGOA) Sinfonietta. The Sinfonietta concert was comprised of musical selections from popular movies — songs the young crowd immediately recognized from Star Wars, Spider-Man and Frozen, to name a few.

‘I AM...’ exhibit opens

The second “I AM…” photo shoot has taken place involving local students and teachers and an exhibit of that work will be available for viewing Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at The Riverenza, 401 East 10th Street. Keilman Dental Clinic PC created the platform for the I AM campaign that “encourages conversations around our uniqueness and how participants see themselves.”

TD artist focuses on pomegranate

Pomegranates and their topographical and cultural power will be the focus when artist Yvonne Pepin-Wakefield speaks Oct. 6 at Columbia Center for the Arts in Hood River. Pepin-Wakefield, who lives in The Dalles and has an additional studio in Tieton in Klickitat County, will give her free talk at 7 p.m. at the center, 213 Cascade Ave., Hood River.

Health District gains accreditation

The North Central Public Health District is among the first 10 such districts in Oregon to earn accreditation from the Public Health Accreditation Board. The voluntary accreditation means the health district meets nationally recognized, practice-focused and evidence-based standards.

Historic schoolhouse repaired on Oregon State fairgrounds

SALEM (AP) — Carla Mundt has a passion for education and an appreciation for its roots, especially when it comes to historic Criterion Schoolhouse, which came to the fairgrounds from Wasco County. The 40-year-old roof on the building began to fail last year and was in danger of not surviving another winter until the OREA and key allies launched a “Save the Criterion Schoolhouse” campaign in May.

Vogt Theater: Gone ... but not forgotten

When Karl Vercouteren began researching the history of the “forgotten” opera house in The Dalles, he became so enthralled by the project that he published more than 200 pages of his findings. “It became much bigger than what I thought when I started out,” he said.
